How to Travel the USA Cheaply
Travel off-season. In my experience, the single biggest saver for cheap travel destinations in the USA is timing: the same hotel room can cost half as much in October as in July. Shoulder seasons also mean fewer crowds.
Eat where locals eat. Food trucks, diners, and markets beat tourist restaurants on price and usually on quality too. I’ve noticed my best travel meals cost under fifteen dollars.
Prioritize free attractions. National parks (with an annual pass), free museums, waterfronts, and historic districts can fill days without spending a dime. Plan around them.
Stay outside downtown. A motel or rental ten minutes out often costs half the downtown price. Just check parking or transit first.
